Quitting caffeine for good -- health reasons (x-post /r/fitness)

-- I've lurked on this sub for awhile, never said much. I had been taking a pre-workout supplement called C4 for a few months and drinking coffee all the while. I was careful to not have had any coffee for 6 hrs prior to using it, but I should have never started it.

I have PAC's somewhat regularly, which is an irregular heart condition that's not considered to be too serious on it's own -- essentially, your heart beats 'too soon' and then gets itself back into rhythm, but you can feel the beats physically coming out of your chest and a bad event will actually feel your heart stop for a second or so before jumpstarting itself -- can be very unsettling. On Sunday night, I had a bout of pretty strong PAC's -- I had worked out that evening with C4 and had had coffee earlier in the morning -- anyways, I had a horrible time trying to sleep and felt very panicky and like I could have a heart attack at any moment -- got into work on Monday and ended up going to the ER (thankfully Phoenix has a great Heart Hospital) for about 6 hours where they kept me under observation and it was determined that it was just a caffeine overdose and to take it easy and cut out the C4 for good --

This morning, since the Dr. didn't tell me to quit caffeine entirely, tried to have a cup of coffee before work (had taken 48hrs off at this point) HUGE HUGE mistake. About a mile down the road in my car, I have a huge PAC event and get clammy with panic and physically have to move my body around and almost grunt to get my heart back into a rhythm -- I had to pull over twice into parking lots for periods of 10 to 20 minutes doing deep breathing to calm myself down -- all the while getting waves of attacks where I could feel the panic rise as my heart would stop and then flutter -- serious palpitations. I'd made it about 3 miles down the road -- finally gathered myself a bit -- I had left my house 45 mins earlier -- and started up the car and turned around to head home as work was not going to happen today -- I was scared. Had to stop 3 more times on the way home -- took me 30 minutes to get the 3 miles back home (no traffic) -- I even had to get out and walk around an empty shopping center parking lot and almost had another wave of PAC's there -- well I did, but I was able to control it. I finally made it home and just tried to flush my system with water and fruit to flush and replenish what the caffeine had done to my system -- I called out of work and that was that -- been taking it easy all day and just feel tired.

So strange -- I was easily a 2-3 cup a day guy for years and years and years and now I'm definitely down to zero. Just like that. I threw everything away -- all my coffee (probably $40 worth) and that's that. I won't even have a soda at this point. Anyways, if you experience anything like this -- take this as a cautionary tale -- also, watch out for those workout supplements...don't be a dummy like me. I was supposed to play soccer tonight, but had to bail to take care of myself.
