A friend uses this method for "cold" brew. Criticisms?

My friend takes a large jar and combines 1.5 cups ground coffee and 4 cups cold water. She lets it sit for 24 hours on her kitchen counter (no refrigeration), then strains it through a mesh filter and refrigerates. She gave me a glass and while it was a little gritty, it was pleasant and strong. Anyone have any criticisms? I want to try it, but aside from using a paper filter to strain, I don't know any other way to improve this method. What do you think?
