I know nothing about coffee, and I didn't even know it

Oh to be young and naive. When I buy Folgers Black Silk I feel like I'm buying top shelf coffee, real good stuff. When my girlfriend drags me starbucks, though the price is nearly insane, I justify it buy saying I;m getting quality....I have learned however that this things ar not the case. It never occurred to me that the coffee at Kroger sits in that container for.......how long? Where does one go about getting quality coffee? More over, how does one brew a good pot. I mean water and grounds just seems simple enough, but does the temp of the water, the temp of the coffee maker, the brew time, affect the end product enough to make comparable differences?
