Aeropress Aeromess

I use the paper filters that come with the Aeropress. When I push the plunger I get usually get coffee escaping through the sides of the twisty bit. It dribbles down the sides of the cup and is enough to saturate two sheets of kitchen paper.

Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Is it the size of the filters?

I bought a stainless steel filter and it doesn't happen with that.
