[Question]French Espresso

So, it's been maybe about a year since I've visited Paris, and really enjoyed trying the food and coffee. Luckily the hotel I stayed had a selection of different coffee styles to drink in the morning. But when I asked for espresso, I was asked if I wanted "French" or "Italian" espresso. Not knowing the difference I tried Italian one day and French on the other. The French espresso seemed more creamy and in larger quantity. Could someone clarify what the difference is. I've never really ran into this kind of selection at any other place I've traveled to.
