I try to clean my grinder every so often, usually whenever I'm switching beans. Grinds and oil from the beans gets stuck, build up, and eventually go rancid. After a while this can really make the coffee taste bad. If you've never done this before I'd highly recommend it, you'll taste the difference.
Anyway, I have a Capresso Infinity and it is such a pain to do. I take everything apart that easily comes apart without tools. Anything I remove I can clean very well. However the base grinding chamber and the shoot where the grinds exit are impossible to fully clean. The shoot design in particular as a stair-step/zig-zag tunnel is not well suited to be cleaned at all. I'm using a small brush, some bottle brushes and paper towels. I'm wondering what other tips/techniques people have for cleaning?
Are there better grinder designs out there that are easier to clean?
I've heard of grinding rice, does that actually work? Would that get the grinds in the shoot? Will that get the oil residue? Do you grind fine or coarse?
I've wanted to use a can of compressed air, but these have chemicals. Anyone tried that or know if it is safe?
Do I need to just get a screwdriver and disassemble even more? Not something I want to do regularly.
