Does anyone else prefer cold coffee?

I don't drink hot coffee anymore, nowadays I much more prefer it ice cold. I like to brew a whole pyrex pitcher of coffee and wait for it to cool down, then ice it up and enjoy it as a refreshment. Or have a cold brew in the morning. Now hot coffee feels "wrong" for some reason.

French Press Fines Leaking

I have been having issues with fines in the bottom of my coffee.

I have tried a Bodum Brazil, a Bodum New Kenya, and a Palm Restaurant press I picked up at a T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods near where I live.

I have used a Hario Mini Mill Slim, as well as taken my beans to Giant (retailer where I live) and used their grinder.

I have tried Eight O'Clock Coffee Beans as well as some beans I got from Trader Joe's.

I have tried many different techniques I found while searching for a fix, such as letting the coffee bloom and scooping it out, changing coarseness, pushing very, very slowly, etc.

I am out of ideas, what suggestions does /r/coffee have?

Any advice is welcomed!

[Gear][Help] Porlex consistency

I just received a Porlex as a gift. The two times I have grinded with it so far the grind is strongly inconsistent. However, the second time I put the output in the input and grinded a second time the same beans. The second result was far better thant the first one. Can anybody confirm that my Porlex is normal or I should return it ?

Cleaning my grinder is a pain, any advice?

I try to clean my grinder every so often, usually whenever I'm switching beans. Grinds and oil from the beans gets stuck, build up, and eventually go rancid. After a while this can really make the coffee taste bad. If you've never done this before I'd highly recommend it, you'll taste the difference.

Anyway, I have a Capresso Infinity and it is such a pain to do. I take everything apart that easily comes apart without tools. Anything I remove I can clean very well. However the base grinding chamber and the shoot where the grinds exit are impossible to fully clean. The shoot design in particular as a stair-step/zig-zag tunnel is not well suited to be cleaned at all. I'm using a small brush, some bottle brushes and paper towels. I'm wondering what other tips/techniques people have for cleaning?

Are there better grinder designs out there that are easier to clean?

I've heard of grinding rice, does that actually work? Would that get the grinds in the shoot? Will that get the oil residue? Do you grind fine or coarse?

I've wanted to use a can of compressed air, but these have chemicals. Anyone tried that or know if it is safe?

Do I need to just get a screwdriver and disassemble even more? Not something I want to do regularly.

A good resource for roasting?

Yesterday I bought a new batch of beans and once again I need to figure out the roast via trail and error. That's always quite a tedious process, so I would like some sort of wiki, which gives a few basic information about the beans. When I google for it, I can only find online shops, which describe the beans with too much buzz.

Alternatively I would love to hear some roasting tips for the beans I just bought. They are Litong, Parchment and Passeio. Maybe even some suggestion which proportions result in a nice blend.

What is the water to coffee ratio based on; yield or water used?

I've seen both so I'm pretty sure more are confused than just me. Thoughts?

Are there any decent combination coffee/espresso makers out there?

My wife and I just got married and we registered for a combination coffee espresso maker that Macy's then stopped carrying. Someone got us a nice coffee maker instead but I've always wanted a single machine that makes both coffee and espresso. There don't seem to be too many on Macy's website and a lot of the ones on Amazon have mediocre reviews. Can anyone recommend a couple good, mid priced, combination coffee espresso makers?

Thanks!

[Gear][Help] Hario Scale

Hi folks. I have an 8 month old Hario scale - the type many of us use with a timer on the left and weight on the right (I'm too idle to go check the model number, but you all know it well). For the last couple of weeks I've not been sure that the weights are accurate. it seems slower to respond; removing beans and replacing the same beans might only give accuracy to within half a gramme. So:

1) how long do you get from your batteries? This is my first thought and a simple fix;

2) anyone know if this scale needs regularly recalibrating? If so, how? Finally,

3) I have been known to spill a little water on the scale - how waterproof is it?

Thanks in advance.
