I picked up a 6 cup aluminum bialetti moka pot from the thrift store the other day ($4 USD) - it has a cracked handle (but still strong/usable) and the old rubber seal was fused to the top metal filter... which came off after I boiled the top portion for about 10 minutes.
Before I did that, however... I tried to remove the plastic handle to no avail.
I put a small nail into the place where the pin was holding the plastic handle to the moka pot and began hammering away. It didn't budge.
Perhaps it's just fused in there really good like the rubber seal was after years of use? Or perhaps I'm just a weakling...? Needless to say, I didn't feel comfortable pounding away too hard on a piece of aluminum...
tl;dr How does one remove the plastic handle from an old bialetti moka pot?
I want to remove all of the plastic pieces so I can boil the aluminum-only bits in vinegar + water solution and scrub them before I put it to use.
