Hi r/coffee! I've been making espresso since Christmas last year and have recently decided to improve the espresso I'm making - and I need your help to do so.
I have a DeLonghi EC152 machine (almost identical to a EC155) which I got secondhand and so only one of the two portafilters came with it. The two different portafilters are designed for 'one cup' and 'two cup' use. I've always assumed I have the two cup version.
However as I've recently bought a set of digital scales I thought I would standardise the procedure and weigh out my beans. It turns out that I can only fit 9g of grinds into this two shot portafilter, as opposed to the typical 14-18g. When tamped, there is about 5mm space between the coffee bed and the top of the portafilter. I tamp with the plastic attachment as 52mm tampers are expensive...it could be that I need to buy a tamper and tamp more to fit more grinds in the basket?
The resulting pour is about 60ml (2oz) in 30 seconds, including the long time it takes the machine to do its characteristic rumbling. The espresso isn't weak, but it's not strong either and I can't add much water to it without making a poor tasting americano.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to improve my setup? I can post a photo of my portafilter if that will help.
